Setting The Perfect Flat Lay

Hi, hello friends!

If you have ever looked through a wedding gallery, you have more than likely seen what is referred to as a flat lay. A flat lay is a collection of objects that are arranged to mimic an editorial styled photo. They normally include the wedding invitation, rings, greenery, or anything sentimental. Flat lays are used to create a shadowbox, without having to put one together! They make for a great photo and create a beautiful memory to have forever.

Today, I will be sharing three tips on how to style your flat lay! These tips can be used for both photographers and non-photographers.

Let’s get started!

Use a style board! Have a styling board or a flat, unique surface to shoot on makes the process of setting your flat lay easier. One of my favorite Etsy shops actually makes them. You can check out her shop, here! They can make your photo really strand out from others with just a plain, white background.

Play with textures! Playing with textures, heights, shadows, and more can create an elegant and unique look! This allows you as the photographer (or coordinator) to build your craft of setting these together. If you ever have free time (lol) I suggest to try to design ones on your own so you’re better prepared in the moment!

Ask the bride for anything meaningful she wants to have photographed in addition to the invitation and jewelry, like this fun “I Do” perfume. This adds that personal element and helps tell the story of the couple!

I hope these tips help with the next time you shoot a flat lay! Remember, that it doesn’t need to be perfect, to be creative, and to have fun! Happy creating, everyone!
